big

Well, bigger anyway. This is the largest thing I have done in years: Part of my New year's resolve to make some larger things. 24 x 30 and a month of Sundays to paint. Wonderful Sundays with the fog ebbing around , then leaving me for the day with a nice light to paint by.

Swiss artist Paul Klee was one of the pioneers of cubist paintings in the early 1900's.
I've been seeing alot of these riffs on cubist paintings in the last couple of years and have been planning on doing one. Since you portion off the canvas, I thought it was a good way to go big.

I primed the whole canvas first with yellow ochre acrylic. Then I used a ruler to keep the edges square.

I used mostly greens and blues for the base colors, with lots of building up with white, gesso and acrylic mediums for texture.

In a way they are folky like patchwork quilts.

(I'm still going to make tiny things.)

Here's how I start. Over a yellow ochre primed canvas I squared in the blocks of color
on this 8 x 10

When it dried, I went back and tightened things up and added the first layer of color for the images and words.

After more detail I finished with this soft Gel gloss. Its wonderful. I looked long and patiently for the right finish. It adds texture and a subtle sheen.

I put it on and let dry overnight.

Now its time for a new year and do I wish that yours is healthy and prosperous and happy?

Yes

yes,

A thousand times

yes!

xxx

Julie, love this new piece......it does look very much like a patchwork quilt.

One that's been made with love and care, beautiful soft colours and individual pictures....
I saw a hand knitted donkey in an op shop yesterday, he was looking a little worse for wear. But someone had knitted him up with love and made him the sweetest hat with knitted flowers, too cute.

A wonky donkey for sure, I thought of you and Viv.

Those foggy Sundays sound 'just perfick' for painting.

Dearest Julie,

I have just surfaced from our family holiday in the middle of mountain nowhere and I am thrilled to have taken the time to visit you. This piece of yours is absolutely beautiful and I am very fond indeed of the colours you have chosen. I am sorry my words are even more limited than usual but I am a little travel weary!

I wish you so much joy, peace and harmony for this new, wonderful year. Stay warm and happy.

Just like all the other things you make, the paintings are beautiful, and I am looking forward to seeing more of them on your blog this year.

May 2012 be as good as 2011 was, and even better where you feel there is still room :-)

Yay, Julie!!! I LOVE it!

I usually make small things. Going for something large has always caused me to pause, and then not do it at all.

You inspire and encourage us to go big in 2012! :)

Happy, Happy New Year!!!

I really love your beautiful new work, Julie! It reminds me of the way I have sometimes created a sampler, in sections where the colours and motifs relate to each other but are separate too. You have just the right touch of delicacy that I so admire. I look forward to visiting you in 2012 and wish you a very Happy New Year.

When I lived in Basel, Switzerland, I would go to the Paul Klee room at the Kunstmuseum (Art Museum) on days that I was feeling sad or lonely. My dad loved Klee's work and I adopted that love when I moved to Klee's native country.

You have inspired me to do a few squares. I'll share when I get going.

Talk soon? Happy New Year, dear Julie!

A wonderful Happy New Year to you as well, Julie. I love our Klee knockoffs! They're charming. I used your beautiful little dish and spoons over the holidays and thought of you--and people thought they were so whimsical. I sent them to your blog. Hope they visit. These are all lovely--I agree--the cubism paintings are very quilt-like!

Hi Julie! It was so great to see you visited the other day! Thanks for stopping by. It's been a while since I've popped over here too. Christmas is such a busy time.

Love this larger piece...when I first saw it I thought it was a bunch of ceramic tiles all hooked together...it is like a quilt and I love every detail. Isn't that soft gel medium great stuff?
