Good night beloved friend

It breaks my heart to write that my best friend , Kary , went to heaven last Saturday evening.
This picture, taken on a trip we took to Maine, is so much like her. She avoided having her photo taken but somehow I got her to pose, and I love this. It was a very happy day there at a friend's house by the sea.

Kary loved all things to do with Autumn. This old hooked rug hangs in her living room. Her corn patch is already head high. She's planted corn and pumpkins in every garden she's had for 25 years.

Her best pal and constant companion, Teddy.

We liked to go to Diners, here we are at Dot's in Wilmington, Vermont. If you knew Kary, or read her blog, you knew she was an amazing cook. The best I've ever known. She collected cookbooks and used them, there's an entire wall at her house, all thumbed, and stained and used. Just the way they should be. She snapped a picture of me without me knowing as we walked up to the diner above. I sure am glad now.

We always stopped to feed and pet the donkeys. Animals loved Kary, especially horses would go right up to her. Carrot or no carrot!

One of her favorite places in the world. Mary's Pumpkin Patch on the Valley Drive near San Luis Obispo in California.

The best cook, the most hilarious story teller, a generous and constant friend. I can't stand it that she's gone. I'm sharing this because so many of you knew her through her blog,

She hadn't been able to write due to her illness, but loved all the friendships she'd made from you.
Take care and hold your friends close~

  1. Julie, I am so sorry to read this. I actually had visited Kary's blog many times. I remember seeing Whiskey Sour there and thinking she had the most beautiful face. There are few words to say but I can tell you this. I understand your loss. I lost my best friend almost 3 years ago and it was because of her that I started my blog. I felt I needed a distraction from the pain. I can tell you it will get better for you as far as the pain and the memories of your sweet friend will always, no matter what, bring a smile to your face. Take care and I'm sending you a hug. Deb

  2. Dear Julie, I am heartbroken. When you told me on Sunday all I did was weep. Kary and I met through her blog 2 years ago - discussing pie crust!

We became fast blog friends and then we began chatting through email several times a day almost daily. We'd chat about so much, mostly Teddy & Duke, and what we were going to make for dinner.

She was so kind to me last Fall when my mom passed away, something I will always remember.

    Hugs,
    Mary & Dukeums

  3. Oh Julie, how heart broken you must be. Mary told me the other day and I have thought of nothing since hearing the sad news. Although I only knew Kary through her blog and emails I feel a sense of deep loss. Kary was always so friendly and kind in her comments and loved life so much. Her garden and her lovely country kitchen the pets and her husband her pizza and football treats she would make. I will keep you, John and Kary's beloved Teddy always in my prayers.I am so sorry for your loss. Susan

  4. Oh Julie, Julie...this has so shocked & devastated me... I had an email from her not long ago and I thought she'd beaten the hideous disease. So grateful that I have kept her last sweet note to me...& that I wrote her a special card telling her how much she meant to me too. I had no idea. So sorry for your loss, sweetheart. She was a really special person for sure, with a huge & beautiful heart. Poor John. Just AWFUL. Thinking of you oxoxoxo

  12. Your friend will live through your beautiful words! My mom and I were talking about a new computer for her and she said she didn't care if it was a really good one because it only had to last a few more years. What a kick in the gut that was! We should all treasure the time we have with loved ones, who knows how long we will have them with us.
    Big hugs,

  25. So, so sorry to hear about Kary's death. Thank you very much for letting us know.
I was one of her regular blog readers, and when she stopped posting some time last year, I sent her a message, asking how she was and expressing my concern at not hearing from her anymore. She wrote back to me, explaining that she had been diagnosed with cancer.
Of course I was always hoping for her to recover, since there are many cancer patients today who survive, and I am very very sorry to know Kary wasn't one of them.
Losing close friends and family is terrible, I am sad for her nearest and dearest, including yourself.

  67. Dear Julie, I just came from Mary's blog when I saw this. Like so many others I'm heartbroken. I had gotten to know Kary(and Teddy)through emails about getting a poodle. I felt such a close bond with her because I was from northern Ca. and she encouraged me to let her know next time I was back. I hadn't gotten any responses from her in the last five months and wondered if she was failing and pulling back. I'm thankful she is no longer in pain but heartbroken for her husband, family, beloved Teddy and of course the many friends she made her in blogland. I'm going to follow you because you remind me of her and I want to get to know you.
    Hugs today.
